The Webster dictionary defines a volunteer this way: “one who offers to enter into any service of his own free will.” All churches are in great need of this type of person, one who chooses to help, because they have a desire to carry out a need or task.
In his book, entitled A Spirit-Empowered Church, Alton Garrison encourages people to get involved in their local church, in the chapter “Serve”. “Equipping, training, and developing the laity for ministry is probably the truest demonstration of the Great commandment and the Great Commission.” Volunteers are what keep a church going. Have you ever wondered how things get done around the church when there aren’t full-time personnel to do the work? Yes, you guessed it. It's through the person who volunteers. If you have a desire to serve, make sure to let your leadership team know you want to volunteer.
There is a passage in Matthew 20:26-28 that encourages us to serve or volunteer:
"Yet it shall not be so among you; but whoever desires to become great among you, let him be your servant. And whoever desires to be first among you, let him be your slave -- just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and give his life a ransom for many." (NKJV)
Remember, these are the words of Jesus Himself as He walked this earth. May we be willing to serve as Jesus did and follow His example? Let me encourage you to make a big difference in your church. Be a volunteer and do something amazing!
