The Joys of Being a Father

By Paul

I am blessed to be the father of two wonderful children. Also, because of these two amazing children, I now have five beautiful granddaughters. It gives me great joy to be a Father and a Papa.

Let’s take a little walk through time and see how this day got its start. After all, love for a father starts at day 1.

Father's Day was started in 1909 by a young lady by the name of Sonora Smart Dodd. As she sat in a church service celebrating Mother's Day, she became inspired by the pastor’s message to also be thankful for her father, Henry Jackson Smart. Henry was a Civil War veteran and farmer, who raised Sonora and her five siblings as a single parent. Because of her adoration for her father, Sonora wanted to find a special way to thank him.

In 1924, President Calvin Coolidge officially inspired Americans to celebrate a national Father's Day. The holiday progressed in 1966, when President Lyndon B. Johnson signed a proclamation, designating the third Sunday of June as Father's Day. It became an official holiday six years later with the signature of President Richard M. Nixon.

The history of fatherhood also lies in scripture. Here are the Top 5 Scriptures concerning fathers and dads. These passages encourage me to be the best dad ever!

1.Be A Father With Integrity

"I Know, my God, that You test the heart and are pleased with Integrity." I Chronicles 29:17 NIV

2.Be A Father With Courage

"Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go." Joshua 1:9 NIV

3.Be A Father With Compassion

"As a father has compassion on his children, so the Lord has compassion on those who fear Him." Psalm 103:13 NIV

4.Be A Father With A Caring Heart

"He will turn the hearts of the parents to their children, and the hearts of the children to their parents; or else I will come and strike the land with total destruction." Malachi 4:6 NIV

5.Be A Father With Amazing Love

"Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices in the truth." I Corinthians 13:4-6

Enjoy your day, Dads, and be a Godly Father with a lot of JOY!!!
