A Healthy, Happy, and Holy Halloween: Ways to Celebrate A Christian Halloween with Jesus at the Center

Halloween, historically a controversial holiday for many Christians, actually has roots in Christianity. Its origins trace back to the Celtic festival of Samhain, which marked the end of harvest and the onset of winter. Over time, the holiday evolved, incorporating various practices related to ghosts and the supernatural. Eventually, it became known as Halloween, a day preceding All Saints' Day, dedicated to honoring martyrs and saints.

"On May 13, A.D. 609, Pope Boniface IV dedicated the Pantheon in Rome in honor of all Christian martyrs, and the Catholic feast of All Martyrs Day was established in the Western church. Pope Gregory III later expanded the festival to include all saints as well as all martyrs, and moved the observance from May 13 to November 1." Source here.

Halloween's modern celebrations often include ghosts, ghouls, and gore, and these aspects often do not align with the values and beliefs of many Christians. However, there are creative and wholesome ways to celebrate the season with Jesus at the center. If you are looking for ways to engage with the holiday in a healthy, happy, and Holy way, here are some simple and meaningful activities to consider:

  1. Biblical Pumpkin Carvings: Instead of traditional Jack-o-Lanterns, carve pumpkins with verses or biblical imagery. Designs like crosses or fish symbolize faith and can serve as powerful visual reminders of Christian beliefs. Display these carved pumpkins on your porch to share your faith with neighbors and passersby. If you are looking for something more challenging, try your hand at one of these intricate designs!
  2. DIY Costume Contest: Combat the Halloween consumerism by planning a DIY Costume Contest. Start by setting a budget for each family member. Visit a thrift store together, then set a timer. Everyone makes a mad dash to find and create the best homemade costume. The winner gets to choose where the family orders take-out! This activity fosters creativity and resourcefulness while minimizing excessive spending.
  3. Family History Lesson: Take the opportunity to delve into the history of Halloween with your family. Explore its origins and evolution through online resources and discussions. For younger children, engage them with Saints Coloring Sheets accompanied by biographical information, combining fun with educational insights.
  4. Fall Festival: Host a fall festival as an alternative to a traditional Halloween party. Incorporate classic autumn games like Bobbing for Apples (harder than it looks and hilarious!), Corn Shucking Contests, and Scarecrow Creation Contests. Create a festive atmosphere with seasonal decorations and refreshments made from fall produce such as apples, pumpkins, and pears!
  5. Ezekiel and the Valley of Dry Bones Lesson Plan: Use Halloween as an opportunity for a dual learning experience. Explore the biblical story of Ezekiel and the Valley of Dry Bones, discussing its themes of restoration and faith. Supplement the lesson with an anatomy activity, learning the names of bones, connecting biblical narratives with practical knowledge. Try this fun song to learn the names of the bones in the body!

These Christian Halloween activities offer meaningful ways to celebrate the season while incorporating faith and values into the festivities. By infusing traditional Halloween traditions with Christian principles, families can create memorable and enriching experiences that honor their beliefs and bring them closer together.
