How to Encourage Hesitant Guests

By The CRN Team

It’s retreat season and you can guarantee that people in your ministry group will be excited! Event planners are thrilled to see their retreats come to fruition while guests are eager for a weekend or week filled with activities and worship. However, those who have never experienced a retreat may not share that enthusiasm and will often come up with every excuse to avoid going. That’s where you can step in and encourage them to give it a chance.

“My whole summer is busy.”

The classic go-to excuse: “I’m busy.” Swimming lessons, ball games, vacations… you name it. Everyone’s summer schedule is packed, but that doesn’t mean they should dismiss an off-site retreat. Remind hesitant friends that a retreat can be life-changing, and all those extracurriculars will still be waiting when they return. Minor plans are flexible. That said, never pressure someone who truly has a major conflict; discernment and kindness go a long way.

“I can’t afford it.”

Finances are a real consideration. But many people brush off the idea of attending without truly understanding the cost or what’s included. Encourage them to ask questions or speak with your event planner or pastor so they can see the full picture. In some cases, the cost truly may be prohibitive. When that happens, consider offering financial help or checking whether the retreat venue provides per-person discounts for large groups. Sometimes, the more attendees, the lower the cost which is a win-win! Ultimately, the short-term investment of a retreat often leads to long-term spiritual growth.

Here's some fundraising ideas for your youth group and church!

“I’m afraid others will judge me.”

Some first-time attendees worry they’ll be judged. A common misconception is that retreats are only for those who are struggling. While many people do attend to reconnect with God or seek guidance, that is far from the only reason. Encourage hesitant individuals to set those fears aside and share the genuine benefits you’ve personally experienced. Others may be facing real struggles but feel uncomfortable being open about them. Assure them that everyone faces hardships, and seeking support, from God and from community, is not a weakness. No one will judge them for wanting help.

“My relationship with God is good. Why do I have to attend?”

If someone says their walk with God is strong... wonderful! But even then, a retreat can be meaningful. They can encourage others who are feeling disconnected, help with activities, pray for those who need support, or even share the gospel with those who don’t yet know Him. Their presence may be the encouragement someone else desperately needs.

In the end, people have many reasons for hesitating to attend their first retreat. The best thing we can do is listen, understand their concerns, and gently encourage them to come along. And who knows? Those same hesitant members may be the ones who thank you most after experiencing the retreat for themselves.
